The Physiology of the Wim Hof Method
This method combines controlled hyperventilation with prolonged breath holds (hypoxia) to deliberately induce a short-term, acute stress response. It is the physiological opposite of relaxing techniques like 4-7-8.
Phase 1: Hyperventilation (30 Breaths)
Taking 30 deep, rapid breaths blows off massive amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). This causes blood vessels to constrict (vasoconstriction), which is why you may feel lightheaded or experience tingling in your extremities. It also temporarily raises blood pH, making it slightly more alkaline.
Phase 2: The Retention (Apnea)
Because you have purged your CO2 (the gas that triggers the breathing reflex), you can hold your breath much longer than normal. During this phase, blood oxygen drops significantly (hypoxia). This hypoxic state triggers the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) from the adrenal medulla.
Phase 3: The Recovery Breath
