The Mechanics of the Sigh

Brought to prominence by neurobiologist Dr. Andrew Huberman, the physiological sigh is a pattern of breathing that humans (and dogs) do involuntarily when they are about to fall asleep, or when they are in a claustrophobic environment and CO2 builds up.

The Alveoli "Pop"

Inside your lungs are millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Under stress, or when sitting for long periods, these sacs tend to collapse, trapping carbon dioxide inside them. This trapped CO2 increases feelings of agitation.

The first long inhale fills the lungs. The crucial second, sharp inhale mechanically pops open the collapsed alveoli. The subsequent long exhale then flushes that trapped carbon dioxide out of the system, rapidly down-regulating the autonomic nervous system.

When to use it

Unlike Box Breathing which is meant to be done for 3-5 minutes, the physiological sigh works in real-time. Just 1 to 3 cycles is enough to dramatically lower heart rate and restore calm. It is the ideal tool to use mid-conversation, before public speaking, or immediately following an acute stressor.
